Massage 101: Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Whether you’re new to the world of massage, or a seasoned vet who wants to learn more about massages to maximize your experience, this guide will walk you through the basics and benefits, and what to expect when getting a massage!

The Basics: Massage Types and Benefits

Designed to relieve tension, a massage is a hands-on therapy practice where a trained therapist works with your skin and muscles by applying pressure. There are many types of massages, but we’ll discuss Relaxing Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, and Prenatal.

  • Relaxing Therapeutic Massage: This particular massage is great for stress relief, releasing tension, and relaxation.

  • Deep Tissue Massage – This massage targets deep layers of the muscle.

  • Prenatal Massage – This massage is for mothers-to-be. It helps to relieve fatigue, ease soreness, and provide relaxation during pregnancy.

Massage Benefits You’ll Love

With regular sessions you may experience, reduced stress, released tension and stiffness in muscles, increased circulation and flexibility, support recovery from injury, better sleep, and overall relaxation

Massages can also assist in relieving medical conditions like arthritis, sciatica, migraines, and back or neck pain. Monthly massages is a common practice for general wellness, while others with chronic pain opt for weekly (or biweekly) visits.

Disclaimer: Massages are not meant to replace medical attention, but pair with your regular routines.

Booked an Appointment? Here’s What to Expect!

First, you and your therapist will talk about your needs, concerns, and problem areas! (If it’s your first massage, you’ll likely complete a health history form.) You’ll then undress and cover with a sheet or towel. Only the area being worked will be uncovered.

You can speak up at any time regarding pressure and comfort, as this is your therapist’s biggest concern. Also, some people enjoy chatting during their massage, while others prefer quiet. The experience is yours!

A Quick Little Note

According to NerdWallet, tipping is customary in most spa or private practice settings in the U.S. (15–20%)1 though in clinical or medical environments it may not be expected. No matter what, a kind “thank you” always goes a long way.
